The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings #1): Thoughts on The Prologue till the end of Ch.3

It was a bright Wednesday afternoon when the newspapers had the weekly films; I have seen a poster of a great film that captured my mind. The Fellowship of the Ring accessed my life by 2003; I remember being just merely thirteen.

Continuing toward my weekly quest of collecting films and actors pictures fashioned by my teenage hands into my scrapbook. O! I admire how the years passed! It was not till 2004 when I finally introduced to the motion-pictures that were viewed over a cable channel.

A year passed unto execution the determination of obtaining the novels, and I did. Also, more years till I started reading the novels throughout Keen on Tolkien.

(The Lord of the Rings #1)

The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel in three volumes: The Fellowship of the RingThe Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The plot revolves around the quest to destroy the evil One Ring, forged by Sauron, the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien originally conceived The Lord of the Rings as one long story told in six books, but he instead divided it into three parts due to publishing demands.
(The Lord of the Rings Study Guide – Course Hero)

Fellowship of the Rings is the first instalment of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy which was meant to be as a full-length novel, but the publisher had another thought due to marketing and length reasons.

Our omniscient narrator carries us within a journey told in past tense, as the journey has already been executed, the ring destroyed, and Frodo has eventually finished the last pages of the red book.

Concerning Hobbits peace nature, merry songs, family trees, and love for their Hobbit holes. Yet shorter than dwarves, they were speaking the old tongue of men. Their family history is too long for one book, same as their merry souls. Hobbit prefered food, parties, and rarely wear shoes. Tolkien point was to distinguish the most comfortable characters, whom one might think as adventures.  Still, the fate of all kinds was upon the shoulders of Hobbits.

Essentially, I thought mankind or wizards were the first smokers, but it struck me as a fact that Hobbits of the Shire developed the “astonishing”  inhaling pipe-weed and they grow to love it as spread this art; that was written by Meriadoc Brandybuck’s history of pipe-weed. While Westernesse originally brought the plant to Middle-earth, The Hobbit was the original creators of this skill; not even the wisest wizard thought of smocking it.

For ordering of the Shire, Tolkien created a whole vision of the Hobbit lands, it went far beyond with all the families. Hobbits had their own experiences and stories, still, nothing had created a confusion more than Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo has been there into an adventure, yet came back with treasures; he even befriended the disturber of the peace, Awizard. On flashback to how the ring made his way to Bilbo, the Prologue ends to start the whispers about the long-expected party.

A Long-Expected Party is the bridge between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Rings. It was the time of Bilbo’s 111 birthday, hitherto, we learn of Frodo his adopted nephew. The September 22 birthday is shared by both Baggins, yet, Frodo will be turning 33—the “coming of age” for hobbits.

“I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” —Bilbo Baggins

Unlike the films, Bilbo was eager to stay with his family till and after party. He ended his eleventy-one by a speech that surprised, yet confused everyone. And he disappeared.
Gandalf was the least charmed by the disappearance, still concerned for his friend. While Bilbo was going off the road again with his fellow dwarves, Gandalf insistence was for Bilbo to leave the ring, like the rest of his possessions, to his heir, Frodo. The mysterious admiration of the ring, also, calling it ‘Precious’ unleashed more concerns to Gandalf. Leaving Frodo with the ring, Gandalf was going far to just learn more of that dark rings.
A year passes after the long gossips of Bilbo’s disappearance ended, and Frodo was left to be the new central theme. The bachelor at Bag End had Merry and Pippin as good friends away of the whispers. Nevertheless, the babbles were flying away into the shire concerning Frodo, he does not seem to age, so as Bilbo.
By Frodo 50th birthday, he decided to leave for the sake of the Shire; all after what Gandalf informed him. The ring is unusual for dark forces are looking ahead for it; including an old creature — which the elves call a ghost that is hungry for blood – is after the ring. All preparations are mad, Frodo sells his possessions, creates a short-term plan, and off the road with his two friends Pippin and Sam. Merry was far ahead for preparations.
Conclusion, I am into this story by far than the films. It’s very illustrated that everything is written calmly and believable. Tolkien diverse lore, mythology, and gothic aspects within his text. The enjoyment of reading is far beyond measure.
